My Silver Hair Update
I thought I would offer an update on my silver hair journey as several people have asked how the process is going. Are you ready to be “in the loop?” I have included a few photos so you can see for yourselves how things are progressing.
Note— I am not a fashionista. That is obvious, right? It rather goes without saying? But to be clear—my purpose is just to share. I am not trying to be a poster person for having gorgeous silver hair. I am not holding up the idea that embracing silver hair is tied to living on some moral high ground either. I support you all finding your own way. We are all aging. It is a privilege to do so. It means we are still here. Alive. Breathing. Loving. Learning. Instead of denying the fact of aging, I am interested in having conversations that offer options as to how we can embrace and empower ourselves as we age —while also supporting each other as women. Undoubtedly, our choices will be different. And that is where the beauty lies.
Okay. Onto the photos! Not only are you getting the silver in these photos…you also get to view me without makeup. I have no filters. It is just me.
I notice that many photos create an illusion that only the front pieces of my hair are silver. It often appears that the rest of my hair is brown. Feel free to see my first photo for evidence. I do have solid blocks of silver framing my face and at the crown of my head…
…but as you can see, the silver has quite taken over the rest of my hair as well! I have the most brown on the bottom layer or underneath part of my hair currently.
Here are a few quick reflections from my silver hair journey this far.
I VALUE…
the simplicity and ease of having silver hair
the feeling of moving toward a greater acceptance of who I am as I age
the process of finding women who are on this journey too. It is inspiring! Mentors are key!
challenging the assumption that having silver hair looks “old” or “outdated”
the savings it brings to my wallet
I HAVE LEARNED…
to protect my hair from the sun (it gradually turns it yellow)
to incorporate purple shampoo into my routine regularly (it brightens the silver)
to focus more on moisturizing my hair. I must use a quality conditioner because silver hair tends to be dry and more porous.
that the haircut matters
that limiting heat styling is better (it is easy to damage silver hair and I find it yellows it too)
that having mentors can help support the process
A couple of my silver hair mentors are…
The late Cindy Joseph
AND NOW, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU! HOW MANY OF YOU ARE CONSIDERING EMBRACING THE SILVER? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SILVER, WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE? A MORE GENERAL QUESTION? WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF AGING FOR YOU? WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING OR POSITIVE REFLECTION ABOUT AGING?
